About Gelugor

Gelugor is a suburb that finds its home at the South of Georgetown, a city in Penang, Malaysia. It used to be an agricultural plantation spot. However, in the 1960s, the modernization and development began. Many buildings and infrastructures were established. Among these were schools, malls, and other commercial areas. Malaysia's main utility firm, the Tenaga Nasional, finds its home in Gelugor. There are many other developments that are on the rise in the suburb, which will open the area to more opportunities. Among this is the soon to be "Light City," a project that aims to make a commercial and residential precinct in Gelugor. Because it is rather small in size, Gelugor can be explored and enjoyed within a day.

The Charm of Gelugor

1. Origin of the name Gelugor

Many cities or states have names that originate from different sources. For most, their names are closely knit to their history, whether from a historical event or an object that has great symbolical value. For Gelugor, its name comes from a plant. It is named after the plant "asam gelugor," which was very common in the Malay Peninsula. The "asam gelugor" is a large rainforest tree. In Penang, they cultivate and use this plant specie for medicinal purposes. In other parts of the world, "asam gelugor" is also used as a spice to give more flavor to their cuisines.

2. Gelugor's Significance to Penang

The importance of Gelugor has been highlighted in the recent years. It was a place for many firsts in Penang, which contributed to its mother state significantly. Gelugor is the founding place of Universiti Sains Malaysia, the first University in Penang, and one of the most renowned Universities in the entire Malaysia. The Universiti Sains Malaysia won an award as the most entrepreneurial university in 2018. Gelugor is also the home of the Penang Bridge, which plays a very crucial role to Penang, being the State's first cross-strait bridge and used to be the longest one in South East Asia. The Penang Bridge connects Gelugor with the Malay Peninsula, and also contributed to the vast growth of tourism in the suburb.

3. History of Gelugor

The history of Gelugor traces way back to the 18th century, when it was inhabited by fishermen coming from Sumatra who were of Malaysian descent. In fact, it was one of the first areas in the State of Penang to be inhabited in the early century. Later on, Gelugor was utilized for agricultural purposes, and spice and coconut plantations were set up in the area. Indian laborers were also brought to Gelugor for the development of the agricultural efforts. This was led by a Scottish man named David Brown, who later became the largest landowner in Penang Island in the 19th Century. It wasn't until the 1960s that Gelugor began its urbanization effort. From that time, many establishments and structures were developed which gave Gelugor the status of a suburb.
